Services for Students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing
At George Mason University, students who are deaf or hard of hearing sometimes experience language and reading deficiencies because of the cultural differences in learning language and/or the hearing impairment. Because a hearing disability can affect academic performance by interfering with the student’s ability to take in and express information, it can also affect how achievement is measured. Therefore, in the compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the following services are provided to ensure that students who are deaf or hard of hearing have equal access to the educational opportunities offered at GMU.
Not all students are eligible for these services. It is the responsibility of the Disability Resources Center (ODS) to see that qualified students who request services are provided appropriate accommodations. Professors can also verify student accommodation requests through this office. We encourage referrals and are available to provide information, answer questions, and respond to concerns.
