Typical Accommodations
In order to receive accommodations, students must register with the Office of Diversity Services. For registration procedures, please go to the registration section.
Alternate Exam Arrangement: Exam modification, including extended time and a separate testing room can provide students an opportunity to better demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the course content rather than show the limitations of their disability.
Interpreters: Sign Language interpreters are available for classes and related events. The interpreters are experienced and well prepared for the educational setting and also adhere to strict, well established professional code of ethics. Requests for interpreters outside that classroom may also be arranged provided correct procedures are followed.
Note-takers: Students who need to focus all of their concentration and attention on listening to lectures or watching the interpreter sometimes find that obtaining lecture notes from a note-taker better enables them to learn in the lecture situation. Note-takers allow students to engage in full participation of the course. They facilitate information into notes as lectured and/or discussed during the class. Note-takers are volunteer peer classmates.
FM Loop: This system allows students with hearing-aids to receive direct input from the professor’s lapel-mic. There is also a special microphone for group discussions.
Priority Registration: Students who are
registered with
the ODS are given
the opportunity to register for classes earlier than the general student
body. This affords the student with a disability the chance to be in
smaller classes and to arrange a class schedule that meets their
needs.
Assigned Seating: With assigned seating the
student does
not always have
to be worried about finding an available seat in the area that is most
conducive towards his or her hearing impairment.
